Material Spotlight: Plaster, Rattan & Leather

Hudson Valley Lighting Group has always employed a design philosophy rooted in materiality.

Hudson Valley Lighting Group has always employed a design philosophy rooted in materiality. While scale and silhouette are important to the design process, material can prove transformative as well. Our current focus? A return to the tactile. Woven together by texture, plaster, rattan, and leather are ‘of the moment’ materials that feel totally timeless. When paired with lighting, each material shines, allowing light to dance beautifully off their surfaces. Skim some of our favorites below.

White Plaster

Inspired by the gesso renaissance, white plaster lends a quiet elegance to any light fixture. The opposite of modern, you won’t find a matte surface in sight! The beauty of plaster is the rich texture it offers, highlighting each beautiful imperfection with confidence.

Chisel Wall Sconce

Part light fixture, part work of art, Chisel simply oozes style. A stunning conversation piece, three holders extend down, creating long, dripping forms that demand attention. Clear glass shades allow this hand-crafted wall sconce to shine even brighter.

Ithaca Wall Sconce

A botanical beauty, Ithaca's tapered metal arm contrasts the soft plaster leaf-shaped shade perfectly. Dedicated LEDs behind the front arm, as opposed to the backplate, light the shade from the front for a look that is unexpected and breathtaking.

Designed in collaboration with Mark D. Sikes, this series is white hot. Lancaster captures old-world sensibility elevated with a modern finish. The delicate frame is timeless, paired with a crisp plaster finish that is delightfully unexpected.

When it comes to Wells, modern forms and crisp finishes converge. An aged brass backplate anchors the piece, lending contemporary flair to the design.

Wonderfully whimsical, Windsor possesses natural grace and inherent style. Classic in form, the candelabra silhouette features a perfectly scaled linen shade that complements the frame’s fluid curves.

Rattan

A natural wonder, rattan has been used in design for centuries and beyond. Its pliable nature makes it perfect for weaving and wrapping, taking on any form it meets. Earthy in tone and texture, rattan provides the perfect contrast to antique brass.

Natural materials complement the structured silhouettes in the Dorset series. Pleated shades, wrapped rattan and brass accents combine beautifully in these elegant designs.

Enduring materials and an elegant shape enhance Somerset’s distinguished nature. The natural marble dome diffuses light beautifully, accented with a delicate brass finial for added finesse.

Traditionalists will love Devon’s classic form—perfectly scaled, it’s effortless in style. Hand-wrapped rattan around the sleek brass frame adds an element of cool contrast.

Rattan-wrapped arms support shades of white Belgian linen giving the Ripley Chandelier a natural warmth. Swooping arms add a modern feel to the traditional tapered shades while the aged brass accents complement the neutral colors.

A simple silhouette and natural materials bring Montague to life. A long, curved arm wrapped in rattan sprouts from an aged brass base and reaches over six-and-a-half feet into the air. Bright light is cast down from the white linen dome shade and also glows softly through it.

Leather

Leather might seem unexpected when it comes to lighting design but that’s exactly why it works!. While it may not be the star player like on a piece of upholstery, hand-stitched details can make all the difference when it comes to light fixtures. Wrapping a pipe or arm in leather adds a sartorial touch, delivering sophisticated designs that command the room.

Fallon Pendant | Design: Jesika Farkas | Photography: Phil Mansfield

Inspired by current European design, Fallon has an unexpected touch of black leather at the cord. The opal matte glass shade and streamlined silhouette add an elegance to any space without distracting from the rest of the interior.

A classic drum shade sconce gets a modern makeover. The white linen shade is held aloft by a black leather arm to create a look that both contrasts and complements. The leather is stitched on the outside to draw the eye and add texture to this surprising sconce.
